Alfa 75 Evo wheels

di jun 06, 2006 18:13

Hallo,

A few months ago I bought the Alfa 75 Evoluzione no. 507 that was for sale at BBC Italian Cars in Tienen, Belgium, to go with my 1600 Indy that I use as a daily driver. It has the original red 15 inch wheels, which I would like to change for wheels the same as, or similar to, those I have seen used on the racers (black 5 spokes). I have been told that someone in the club (called Claas or Klaes?) knows lots about wheel options for 75's, so I am posting this in the hope of receiving some advice. I would like to put on 17 inch wheels if these will work, with a tyre that is not too low profile, given the front-spoiler-ride-height problems the car has and the fact that the ride is already hard enough. I see that Speedline have just launched a black magnesium Corse racing wheel that looks right but is only available in 18 inch and costs a fortune. Is there something similar in alloy?

I'm sorry I can't post in Dutch but my knowledge of the language is very limited. Any help on this issue would be much appreciated.

I think u need Klaas, he is right about now working on his EVo and has tried a pair of wheels, he (and more of alfisti over here) can tell you exactly which size does fit the best. Now were talking about an EVO (my dream car 8) ) do you have pictures of the beast? :)

Thanks a lot for your reactions and for the link to Klaas - I'll send him an email and hopefully get some good advice.

Thanks also to clecke for the photos, since I didn't have any myself. I see that we are almost neighbours, as you are just down the road from me in Leuven. The photo of the rear of the car reminds me that the tail badge is in poor condition. I guess it's naive to think it might still be possible to get a new one, but if anyone knows of a new/good one for sale anywhere, I'd be very interested to know. Otherwise I'll just have to try to get it refurbished.

Bert - it's really generous of you to offer to forgive the rear spoiler on the car if I give you the keys but I'm afraid I just can't go for it. I actually like the spoiler myself and assumed it was original. But presumably I'm displaying my ignorance of 75 specifications there, or was it an option?

Thanks again to everyone.

The spoiler wasn't a original option, but it is a "Zender" spoiler.I think that it doesn't look that great on a 75.

Jeremy, about the tailbadge; if its similar to the 'normal' 75 turbo tailbadge it maybe can be purchased new. Check www.tuynder.nl , fill in the form for info, or send an email.

Jeremy, congrats on your purchase. Great to see someone go the same route as I did on wheels. First of all, the rules on wheel and tiresize that count for regular 75's are the same as for the Evo. Despite the wider looks of the extensions; the metal fenders underneath are similar to all other 75's fenders.

I did quite an extensive study on possible wheels and even considered some expensive ones (Gotti and Revolution) like you are right now because I wanted to fully fill the fenders with 16" wheels. 17" tires would be more expensive. 16" was minimum to fit the larger frontbrakes. Furthermore, i was advised to stick to the same width front and rear to maintain neutral roadholding. Wider tires in the rear would increase understeer (advise Ron Simons). I did however use a different ET value back and front, since there's more room to fill in the rearfenders. When you go for different ET values, the choice of wheeks becomes limited to some expensive ones and some AZEV's and Borbets. These you can order in same wheelwidth with different ET's and are less demanding on your monthly paycheck!

I ended up buying AZEV's 16 X 7,5 ET ET's 25 front, 20 rear with 205/45 tires. Spedometer is smack on with this size, checked it with Tomtom!!

Please keep us posted on what you're gonna do!

Regards, Klaas

PS, lower that machine!! I

Thanks for the advice, Klaas. That's probably stopped me from rushing out and wasting money on something that won't work. I didn't know that the usual wheel size restrictions applied to the Evo too. At least there's a bit of flexibility on the ET. You've opted for a 16" solution (7.5J sounds nice), but did you find out during your investigations if 17"s are possible, or completely out of the question? I'd like to know all the possibilities before trying to decide what to do. The only other wheels I've actually seen 'in the metal' on an EVO were from a Delta Integrale, but I think they were 16". Looked good. They were on a tuned Evo, belonging to Rocket Ronnie and also for sale at BBC in Tienen - I think it was finally sold to Holland and put on the market for more money.

I'm really not sure about making it any lower - I heard so many stories about front spoilers being destroyed on speed bumps. Even now it almost scrapes when I take it out of my hangar and I also have quite a steep ramp into the parking of my apartment building. I don't really want to remove the bottom section - it looks so nice.

By the way, how do you find the TomTom? I don't have GPS in any of my cars but have seen a few systems working and am thinking about a portable one. I've heard different reports about TomToms - some say best thing ever, others that it just sends you into military areas full of unexploded shells (no joke - it was on the BBC), which can ruin your day. And your Alfa, of course, which is much worse.

fRank - thanks a lot for the link. The problem is that the Evo badge has a small 'e' at the end, which is different from the normal Turbos I've seen. Still, I'll ask and hopefully might get lucky.

Gtvco - thanks for clearing up the spoiler issue. I guess I'll have to live a lonely life as the only one who actually likes it.

I see there are some impressive Alfa collections out there, although I don't even dare to ask about the forthcoming "pimpmobiel". In the interests of transparency, I should also declare a 1750 Berlina ('70) and a Montreal ('71), converted to carbs because I left it too long and the dreaded Spica went into early retirement. Spica in Italy wanted over 4000 euros to rebuild it but wouldn't even give a guarantee it would work(!), a generous offer I was able to resist. A friend had developed a carb conversion for his own Monty, so I bought that. Much nicer. Neither of these are running at the moment but I aim to get them going for this summer.

Before leaving, I have to say that this is a very nice Forum set-up: very friendly and works really well, too. Congratulations.

Jeremy

I'm probably the only one in the world, but I love the looks of a Evo on the original (red GTV6) wheels.... :-)

Pitty to modernise it.

Thom - you are clearly a purist and, to be honest, so am I - usually. But when I look at the car I just can't understand why they put such small wheels under such big wheel arches. To me, it looks a bit silly and cries out for a bigger wheel. Of course, if/when I do change them, the originals will be carefully stored, as was the case with the previous owner (so they've remained in very good condition).

fRank - that's interesting. I know it's a quick one because I spoke with the guy who drove it back from Italy and he was smiling a lot. I spent months wondering whether to buy it but hesitated too long and then it was gone. Now it's rather more expensive.

Judging from your profile - probably the only two Alfas in existence you don't own ? ;)
