Werd op eBay verkocht voor 90 pond. (eBay-member mistuff-uk = www.mimodels.com)What do Cooper cars and Alfa Romeo have in common?
Not much it would seem, but Mr John Riseley-Prichard, an avid English amateur racer took it upon himself to marry the two in 1953. Courtesy of pictures in “The Autocar”, he fell in love with the sleek look of the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante. The Alfa protoype never saw a racetrack, but with only photographs to work from, Riseley-Prichard commissioned Wakefield’s of Byfleet to build him a custom body of the “Flying Saucer” for his Cooper 500 chassis. They did a remarkable job, without very little visual difference from the original, although certain things were altered such as the lights and the engine intake mounted on the bonnet. The only major change was the forward hinging of the entire front body section, which allowed access to the Riley 1500 engine he installed. Despite this very handy feature, he also retained the narrow bonnet opening from the original. Originally painted Italian Racing Red (of course), the car was ready to race by the August Bank Holiday weekend, where it suffered serious damage in an accident and subsequently caught fire.
Not to be put off, the repaired car returned to competition the following year with a much more powerful Connaught engine. It was now painted British Racing Green according to noted racing historian Anthony Pritchard (contemporary reports in Autosport magazine referred to it as a “little black car”). It raced at Silverstone in May 1954 in the Daily Express Trophy race with number 16 as modelled here where it came in 6th overall. The car went through other changes before being written off in a road test accident in 1955. We have found historical photographs of the car at four different events.
This 1/43rd scale model is handbuilt exclusively for mimodels. It is made with resin parts, photoetched trim and cast metal wheels, and mounted on a base not shown in photographs. Other pictures are available to be emailed on request. We also have the earlier Red prototype from 1953 and the later Scots Blue livery car in stock.
