Junior Zagato Restoration

do jun 01, 2006 21:19

Hello!

My name is João Vale and I'm from Portugal. I'm a nut for alfas  and I keep them busy on events organised by the ALFAnord http://www.alfanord.pt Club here.

Here are some photos of my alfas:

I've found this forum through the AlfaBB forum.

I wanted to talk with youguys because I've just bought a Junior Zagato. And I plan to restore it to original spec.

This text below is a copy of my post on the AlfaBB forum: http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/showthr ... post219366

I'm working on the mechanics before starting to fix the bodywork.
The brakes have been overhauled and now I have to start on the engine.

The engine looks good, it isn't frozen. It needs a new clutch MC.

The car came full of surprises! It has a 2000cc engine with an LSD diff and big brakes. It has a sump guard a box full of extra parts! It also has a pair of K&N air filters and yellow KONI rear shocks... :D

Unfortunantly it has a roof window (I don't know how you call it in english...).

I want to restore the car to original spec. I think the car was originaly red but I prefer "medium blue" AR328...

The bonnet has this funny pic painted on the top...

Afbeelding

I'll be posting some pictures of the repair...
This is another post on the same topic:
I'm missing the stainless trim arround the front and the plexiglass and the original seats.
I have the rear bumper although it is in sorry rotten state...

The rest of the stuff I'm not sure. I'm still comparing photos to see...

I'm not very worried about the body because the guy that I usually go to fix my cars bodywork is very good. He fabricates door panels and sills by hand for the GT Bertone. I'm hopping that he can save the damage on the Zagato.

I have sent a mail to the Alfa Romeo Historic Archive and they said the original color is white AR014.

here are some photos of the interior of my car. The dash was upholstered by somebody and, because of that, it doesn't fit very well.

three questions about the interior:

- Is the rear view mirror the correct part?
- Are the door cards correct?
- Does this car have sun visors?

Yesterday I started the engine for the first time. It is fine, it just needs a fuel pump and carb tune up.

Thanks for the info! Please post some pics of yours!
I saw the events photos on this site and noticed that there ar some JZ present. Does anyone have good photos of them so I can take notes how to correct my car?

I would really apreciate it. :D What I really need are photos of the interior and front nose with and without the plexiglass and chrome grille. So I can correct the nose on my car.

Thanks!

Thanks! These are terrific photos! The best I have encountered in the Internet!

Now I just need photos without the grille. Does anyone has photos of JZ in restoration?

Thanks!

youre welcome ;)

did you also see the original sized photo's? perhaps you can see more details there.

If there are Junior Zagato owners here, I don't know, but there will probably be people here who know people with a Junior Zagato and perhaps they have pictures of them without the grille.

I'd expect the electrics to be 99% GT Bertone except for the wiring for the little motor for the rear screen but I have no absolute knowledge of this.

Glad to see you made it here too, João.

I have the scematics for a 1600Z, it's out of the owners-manual. I'll see if make a copy of it and post them. Also, try looking for the manual on eBay, there is a German guy who's is selling it on CD. Next time I see it I'll let you know.
For the 1300JZ it has the same electrics as the Spider Duetto. Only there is an extra loom for the tailgate-motor, it runs next to the wires for the rear lights and fuelgauge.

If you want photo's of a JZ under construction, try to find Style Auto nr 23 It has a yellow JZ on the cover. An other nice book to have is
Le Zagato Fulvia Sport Junior Z
This book was out-of print but it has been re-printed and you can find it on eBay.

For more information, just Look here, or here

If you're looking for a restauration story, than here is a nice magazine.

And if you want to go all the way, here are some Zagato Sunnies and to make the outfit complete, one original Zagato blazer

This magazine also looks intresting, but I think you're already bidding on it because the same guy also bought this car...............

I'll see if I can find time to post some (rusty) pictures of my car.

hello,

thanks for the help!

Fortunantly I've already found the user manual and parts manual in PDF format thanks to some friends of mine.

Those links of the magazines are interesting. Yes, I was biding onone of them but it is getting too expensive, I've let it go.

I'm still looking for pictures without the nose. Can I post yours please?

here is some progress on the car:

Just took out the seats. The floor was full of tree leaves and nuts below the seats

Afbeelding

After I removed the red carpet I found remains of the original rubber mats. Unfortunantly they were cracked and incomplete.

Afbeelding

These are the seats out of the car. I will keep them for future projects. While I'm searching for original seats the car will make do with a pair of GTV2000 seats...

João, as prommised here are some photo's of the front of my car.
After cleaning the car and taking off old paint and other stuff this came to the surface

Afbeelding

Some evidence of previous restoration and lots of rust
After some inspection and banging the front, some pieces fell on the floor.
Afbeelding
The only recognizing parts are the bumper mounts. The rest are parts of the radiator support, the main member near the sway bar and more rust.

This is when I decided to do some reconstructive surgery. I bought lost of steel and had some parts fabricated.
Namely the beam where the bonnet is attached to and the cross member near the sway bar.
The only original part that was re-used were the mount for the headlights. The rest is all new steel.

I had a new front piece the under tray made by Frank Hanel, it took about 4 months before I got it, but I was in no rush.
After I trimmed the edges around the new steel it was time to paint the underside and start working on the rest.
The rest of the pictures are of various stages of painting before I send the car to the paint shop.

If you click on these two links below, you get a scan in two parts of the electrical system of a 1600 Zagato.
Its the same as for the 1300, except for the warning light brake fluid level and hand brake also there is a heated rear window which isn’t on a 1300.
An other difference is that the 1300 has 2 control lights for the indicators where the 1600 has just 1. Of course some switches are placed at
different locations, but all in all you can work with this.

http://rapidshare.de/files/23901655/Ele ... 2.tif.html

You were wondering about the rear view mirror, for a JZ the one you need is the one from a Spider, the one with build-in interior light.

I hope this helps you with your car, if you want more rusty pictures let me know, there are more where these came form..............................

Some more work done! I've been away for some time because the bodyshop didn't have time to work on the car. But now things are going again and the car is going to the body shop next week.
Meanwhile I've removed the engine and transmission and today I removed the wiring.

I had to remove the servo so I could get better access to the wiring harness.

Afbeelding

I loosened all the wiring harness in the engine bay and passed it to the cockpit.

Afbeelding

Afbeelding

This wiring is a lot more complicated than the ones I'm used to on my Bertone Alfas. It doesn't have easy connectors so I have to mark each wire so I'll now how to get it back together... A major PITA...

After removing the harness I started to remove the electrical components. I started on the wiper system. I had to remove the cover that was a bit stuck and rusted but all worked out well...

Found a new hole to repair...

Tomorrow I'm going to remove the heater system that is filled with tree leafs. On the other hand it's in very good shape. It's the best heater I've found on Alfas! The plastic case is impecable!!! :D
