I received this afternoon the notice from a friend, member of the Alfa Blue Team:

Fiat has decided to pick up valuable cars out of the Alfa museum collection and put them on the market in order to get money, arguedly to help renewing the museum itself. They should be currently in the process of choosing which cars they will sell out.

Again, I agree with my Italian Alfisti friends that such a news deserves our strongest protest. The Alfa Romeo museum is a patrimony of all Alfa enthusiasts, representing an heritage which is NOT at disposal of Fiat's bean counters.

Any other make, when celebrating its centenary, offers parties, events and gadgets in order to capitalize on the brand image. It is unheard that such an event is the occasion for parting out with the historical patrimony, to fail to organize properly the event, and to just market insanely overpriced items such as the €500, 200 pages book, or the twin cars set where 2X 140€ become 500 just because it's inside a "centenary" logo-ed showcase.

It's madness. Hence I couldn't possibly agree more to a "strongest protest". But I'm afraid as we speak a bunch of those self-proclaimed Alfisti - I'm not saying your Italian friends or mine - prepare to celebrate 'their' happy Centenario as some sort of endorsement to Fiat's policy. Hurray! And auguri a A.L.F.A. Romeo.

Unbelievable, Fiat/Alfa Romeo are killing themselves.

Such a bad thing to celebrate its 100th birthday on a way like that.
Getting money for a building by selling Your own history, cars who were so important for the brand Alfa Romeo in the past.
Ford did the same with the historic Jaguar collection, sold a lot of cars to make some money, and a little later Jaguar was sold to Tata(correct me
if I am wrong), think this is the beginning of the end, if You have to make money on this way by just selling some collectorcars,
it simply shows how unhealthy Alfa Romeo is at the moment......
What will come next?

Very sad indeed. GM and Chrysler sold off parts of their collection just before they went into chapter 11(USA term).

This museum should be untouchable, as part of maybe a goverment collection like the Smithsonian in the USA.

En dan is het zo beroerd nog niet om onderdeel uit te gaan maken van VAG.
Krijg je elk jaar, naast een Bodensee vol adepten, ook nog eens dikke speeltjes speciaal voor die dag te zien.

Ik noem een V12 Golf, welliswaar niet helemaal gebruiksklaar, maar wel een ziek idee wat "even" gedaan wordt.

Gelukkig vind ik het rijden in 33 al fantastisch, dus eenmaal onderweg naar Baveno, kan mijn vakantie niet meer stuk.

Eigenlijk zou er een wereldwijde oproep moeten komen aan autoliefhebbers om deze auto's niet te kopen... maar ja genoeg megalomane oliesjeiks, investeringsmaatschappijen en ander tuig op deze aardkloot die dat zullen negeren.

Een oproep om 't niet te kopen heeft imho inderdaad weinig zin. Als ik het geld zou hebben, zou ik ondanks alle protesten ook wat lekkers scoren!! Ik beloof dan wel haar elk jaar op wat evenementen te showen.

Een oproep aan het FIAT concern dit prachtige stukje geschiedenis te bewaren heeft dan misschien wel meer zin. Hoewel ik mij ook daarbij afvraag of er bobo's zijn die zich wat aantrekken van een groep fanatici...eehh...Alfisti die allemaal in het het verleden zijn blijven hangen en over de nieuwe Alfa's alleen maar klaagzangen ten gehore brengen met als kern dat het vroeger allemaal beter was...
Face it, een prachtig museum vol met nostaligische pareltjes van weleer is in de huidige massa-consumptie markt en met de moderne weggooimentaliteit nu eenmaal niet van toegevoegde waarde voor de afzet van moderne, veilige, schone en weet-ik-wat-voor-non-issue-marketing-statements-nog-meer vervoersmiddelen.

Maar, ook ik hoor tot de groep die liever zijn 75 blijft rijden dan dat hij veel geld uitgeeft voor een veel minder karakteristiek nieuw product. En ook ik heb stiekem hoop dat men bij Fiat/Alfa het licht ziet en weer strak sturende, lekker aan het gas hangende, onderscheidende en, dare I say it, rwd Alfa Romeo's op de markt brengt. De Giulia (?) lijkt weer een stap in de goede richting.

Dus, tegen beter weten in:

Heel triest als dit door gaat.
Juist de Duitse merken als Mercedes , VW en Audi hebben kortgeleden musea geopend en tentoonstellingen omtrent hun erfgoed gehouden.
En juist het merk met wellicht de mooiste historie laat de boel verslonsen.

Toen ik een jaar of twee geleden met de portier van het museo sprak waren er nog plannen om in Rho een museum annex designcentrum annex experience centrum te bouwen.
Nou we weten inmiddels dat het design centrum naar Torino is verhuisd en Arese stil ligt.
Geen idee wat de plannen zijn en of die ooit gerealiseerd zullen gaan worden.
Las dat het voorheen Alfa terrein klaar gemaakt moet gaan worden voor een Expo.

Hopelijk doet de komst van vele Aflisti voor het Centenario nog iets om een merkbeleving op poten te zetten.
Vrees dat we anders in de toekomst alleen op het Spettacolo nog een Alfa merkbeleving zullen meemaken.

I'm awaiting updates from my Italian friends about how they intend to express the protest. I will post as soon as I will be informed.

This is a matter that I have been anticipating for a long time.

The sale of historical cars from the Alfa Romeo museum is basically a knock-on effect from the closure of the Arese factory. The factory is now gone, the Centro Stile is no longer there, so the museum has absolutely no advantage of being located there at all.

Due to its poor location, nobody visits the museum apart from real diehard Alfa Romeo enthusiasts. I doubt that many people realise the museum actually exists! It always seems deserted when I am there. The buildings are sad and dilapidated and Arese is not a touristic hotspot by any means. It really is a bad image for the Alfa Romeo brand, certainly when compared to the museum of BMW.

Despite this the Alfa Romeo museum has a truly wonderful collection and is really one of the hidden jewels of Milan.

Fiat understand the significance of the historical Alfa Romeo models and do spend a great deal of money on the historical sporting events (Mille Miglia, Goodwood FOS, Pebble Beach, etc).

I think that in order for Alfa Romeo to bring their fabulous brand closer to the international tourists of Milan, they should focus on a new museum in the centre of Milan. This would mean less museum floor space, however a higher presentation level brought closer to potential new customers.

A number of the cars could be stored elsewhere and only used at events, however the trouble is that there are so many! At the moment there are only three highly talented mechanics for so many cars that are constantly lent out across the world. This is unfortunately not enough and a lot of the cars in the museum are worn compared to the (arguably over-restored) cars we see from private collections.

So, to be perfectly honest I'd rather see a selection of the cars sold to real enthusiasts rather than leave them to collect dust or deteriorate.

I however only vote in favour of a selected sale if the proceedings go directly into a new museum and bringing the experience of the fabulous Alfa Romeo brand closer to new customers.

Ik zeg opdoeken die zooi in Arese. Verkoop kan alleen maar betekenen dat de auto's dan wel in handen van liefhebbers komen.

Als je zoals met de BLR 9-daagse in bijv. 'BMW welt' komt en vervolgens met de neus op de feiten in Arese gedrukt wordt: vergane glorie...zeer triest.

Het museum blijft in Arese.
Er blijkt tevens al een regeling geweest te zijn dat Fiat de Alfa's uit het museum niet zomaar mag verkopen of naar een andere locatie verplaatsen. Goed nieuws, nu nog een meer marketing-gerichte opzet!
